American Utility Metals sister company, American Utility Processing, has Stretch Leveling and roller leveling capabilities in Akron, Ohio. Serving the bus, coal, rail and trailer industries. The line produces vehicle side skins and other products.

AUP has operating systems approved to the requirements of ISO9001:2000.

the stretcher leveling process

The in-line stretch leveling process has several advantages over conventional tension leveling.

Our unique in-line stretch leveling process allows us to correct flatness variances in coils that are not commercially acceptable due to camber, edge wave, oil canning, cross bow, coil breaks, and other coil defects. Because there are no rollers being used to tension level material, impregnation or "pick-up" is a non-issue.

Our 65' bed length enables us to see and catch a wide range of surface imperfections that other roller levelers may never see. The line enables fast corrections to primary or secondary coils on an as-needed basis prior to cutting/sheeting to length. When a defect is detected we have the option to either "correct" the problem through stretch leveling or mark and cut out the flaws at the shear. Other conventional tension levelers would be forced to reject and rewind the coil, forcing them to return or scrap out the coil.

The only measurable effect on the coil is a slight reduction in material width, and a slight increase in length. The effects on physical properties (material yield strength and hardness) have been thoroughly tested and are considered negligible.

Coil camber (also referred to as edge wave or edge buckle) directly impacts squareness on cut sheets. As camber increases in severity, the ability to hold acceptable sheet squareness diminishes. Conventional tension leveling equipment cannot correct this condition. Our special stretching sequence allows us to remove coil camber, enabling us to bring sheets that would normally fall outside of acceptable squareness tolerances back into squareness. The end result: fewer quality problems, less waste, and lower cost.
